“What is it about Perth, that produces so many good bands?”…

Eager eyes on the other side of the Australian continent now look west, to see what new and unique talent will emerge from beyond their horizon. Eskimo Joe, Snowman, Little Birdy, The Sleepy Jackson and Birds of Tokyo –these are but a few contemporary bands that have defied the tyranny of distance to dominate national airwaves.

But there’s more to the fertile Perth music industry, and its bent for producing some of our finest musicians, than what we see today. The Farriss Brothers and INXS, Dave Faulkner and The Hoodoo Gurus all materialised in this West Coast capital. Meanwhile, the Triffids managed to change the landscape of Australian music, before returning to their humble roots in the port town of Fremantle.

So in the spirit of other international music documentaries such as Hype and Live Forever, SOMETHING IN THE WATER explores the rich history and diverse setting of a hitherto neglected part of Perth’s identity.

…Is it the isolation, the environment or the scene itself? Or is there in fact “something in the water”?
